Note: The ill fated and ultimately unsuccessful deployment of the IPKF in Sri Lanka, incurred for India the highest number of casualties suffered by the Indian Armed Services since 1947. An estimated 1200 Indian personnel were killed or died from wounds received in action, with several thousands more wounded
