First Afghan War Medals: One identical obverse medal with 4 x different reverses were awarded in the series of campaign medals awarded by the Honourable East India Company in respect of services during the 1st Afghan War 1841-42, vis; Candahar 1842; Cabul 1842; Ghuznee Cabul 1842 & Candahar, Ghuznee. Cabul 1842. Separate differently designed campaign medals were awarded for Ghuznee 1839, Jellalabad 1841-42 & Defence of Kelat-i-Ghilzie 1842
The medal with reverse 'Candahar Ghuznee & Cabul 1842', is reported to have been awarded to 1400 European recipients and an estimated 4811 medals awarded to native recipients (Reference 'British Battles & Medals' (Sixth Edition, Spink, 2007)
