The Natal Hired Transport (NHT) was a vital, improvised logistics unit during the Second Boer War (1899-1902). It was raised and operated in Natal Colony, formed from the Public Works Department's transport section, supplementing military needs by pressing civilian wagons, mules, and drivers into service for logistical support. Only the European overseers 'Conductors' qualified and received the Queen's South Africa Medal - all of which were silver issues and all awarded without  clasp (African natives that worked with the Natal Hired Transport were not awarded any similar medallic recognition or reward, albeit that their services performed on behalf of the Natal and British forces represented greater risk and danger......

A very scarce seen unit. the 'Natal Hired Transport', the medal roll of the unit showing that only an estimated 62 x medals - all with no clasps - were issued to Conductors of the 'Natal Hired Transport'
