Thomas William Jarvis, son of Frederick Jarvis (a railway Platelayer) & Sarah Ann Jarvis (nee Digby) was a native of Walthamstow, London, England where he was born on, 1883. By trade a 'Labourer', Thomas was 18 years & 10 months of age, when he first attested for the British Army in England on, 23 January 1901, on which date he expressed a desire to join the 'Corps of Lancers of the Line'. On enlistment he was posted to the 12th Lancers, which unit's regimental depot he joined at Colchester, Essex, England on, 28 January 1901. The regimental number he was given during his first enlistment was No. 5417. His terms of engagement were the usual short service terms of 7 years With the Colours' and 5 years on the Army Reserve. His service record with the 12th Lancers during his first period of Army service was:
- Home: 23/01/1901 - 28/01/1903
- India: 29/01/1903 - 09/11/1910
- Home: 10/11/1910 - 22/01/1913

The month after the outbreak of the Great War, Thomas - evidently a patriot - enlisted into the British Army for a second period of service, when, on 29 September 1914 he re-joined 'The Colours', at Tottenham, London, England, and was initially posted to the 6th Reserve Regiment of Cavalry. He was next posted to his old corps, the 12th Lancers, on 13 November 1914, and was given the regimental number 10190 (which latterly was variously seen/used with a prefix GS, or L). His service record during his second period of Army service was:
