John Little, was a native of the parish of Shankill, Co. Antrim, Ireland, where he was born circa 1840. On 30 April 1858, at the age of 18 years and, described as employed as a 'Labourer', he attested for service with the British Army, at, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. On enlistment he was posted to the 7th Hussars, a cavalry regiment, where he was given the rank of Private. John subsequently transferred to the Royal Regiment of Artillery on, 1 October 1858, being posted to the 4th Battalion Royal Artillery, and given the rank 'Gunner'. John Little remained a 'Gunner' for the rest of his long military career. By the time he took his final discharge from the British Army at Aldershot, Hampshire, England on 18 May 1880, John Little had served a total of 22 years & 19 days. At discharge his military character and conduct were described as 'Very Good' his name only once ever appearing in the regimental defaulters book, and never having been tried by court martial. During his military service, John had served 9 years 305 days in various parts of the British Empire, as under:
- Gibraltar: 6 years 157 days
- Halifax (Nova Scotia): 2 years 61 days
- Barbados: 1 year 87 days
At discharge, John Little, indicated that his future place of residence was to be Belfast
