An award issued sometime between 1947-1952

The recipients' unique Army Number is from the block 2966001-3044000 allocated to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1920, from which army numbers were awarded sequentially to all enlistees - regulars and reserves - who were posted to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in the period circa 1920-1941

Prior to Private H. Campbell joining the Middlesex Regiment - he is confirmed having first prior transferred from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders to the 1st Independent Machine Gun Company, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, at which time he held the rank of  'Private' (on-line transcribed archive records of the Royal Northmberland Fusiliers accessible on the Findmypast generalogical website refer)

No.1., Independent M.G. Coy, R.N.F.: This formation had its origins in 4th Battalion Royal Northumberland Fusiliers that served with the B.E.F. in France, January-June 1940. 4/RNF was converted to 50th Battalion Reconnaissance Corps in 1941, and subsequently served in North Africa and Mediterranean area until returning to the United Kingdom In June 1942, it returned to the United Kingdom and was in the Home Forces once again. On 6 June 1942 it became 50th Regiment, Reconnaissance Corps, and in March 1943 reverted to the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers as the 4th Battalion. On 25 April 1944, the battalion was 'suspended' with its its personnel forming three independent machine gun companies for the British armoured divisions of the 21st Army Group:
- 1st Independent Machine Gun Company assigned to the Guards Armoured Division
- 2nd Independent Machine Gun Company assigned to the 11th Armoured Division
- 3rd Independent Machine Gun Company assigned to the 7th Armoured Division

All three Indepdent Machine Gun Caompany's subsequently served throughout the North-West Europe Campaign, where they variously saw action at Odon, Bourguébus Ridge, Mont Pinçon, The Nederrijn, The Rhineland, and The Rhine

At the time of being issued his Efficiency Medal the recipient was serving with a battalion of the Middlesex Regiment
