The recipient was a Nepalese soldier of Gurkha ethnicity and Hindu faith from Western Nepal, holding the rank of Rifleman while serving with the 1st Battalion 2nd (The Prince of Wales's Own) Gurkha (Rifle) Regiment (The Sirmoor Rifles) of the Bengal Army
On 1 January 1948, the descendent 1/2 Gurkha Rifles transferred to the British Army
The campaign in the North East Frontier (present day Nagaland) of India in 1891, resulted in the award of several Victoria Crosses (to British Officers of the Indian Army) and numerous awards of the Indian Order of Merit, reflective of the intense close combat actions fought in the Manipur Expedition.
