Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880 (Bugler Saitia Lohar 5th Goorkha Regt)
Wounded-in-Action: No. 1295 Sepoy Sitia (sic) Lohar, 5th Goorkha Regiment is recorded as being 'Wounded-in-Action' (shown as slightly wounded) at the Battle of Peiwar Kotal on, 2 December 1878 (ref The Second Afghan war 1878-1880 Casualty Roll (Anthony Farrington, 1986)
Saitia Lohar was appointed 'Bugler' sometime after 2 December 1878, and before the Kabul to Kandahar march between 9-31 August 1880
The 5th Goorkha Regiment (post 1922 titled 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles 'Frontier Force') was one of three regiments (the others were 2/GR & 4/GR) of the Gurkha line of the Indian Army to participate in the famous forced march between Kabul and Kandahar in 1880, and had the distinction of being the only Gurkha Regiment qualify as a regiment (bit not all personnel) for the Afghanistan War medal with a maximum issue of 4 x clasps
So distinguished and respected were the 5th Goorkha Regiment for their services throughout both phases of the second Afghan War - and especially their services at Peiwar Kotal in 1878 and later at the Asmaii Heights during the Battle of Kandahar in 1880 - that on being elevated to the peerage, Field Marshal Lord Roberts of Kandahar selected a rifleman of the 5th Goorkha's (together with a 92nd Highlander) as supporters on his coat of arms
