The recipient Ishar Singh, was an Indian soldier of the Sikh faith who served as a Sepoy (Private) with the 14th Sikhs, an infantry regiment of the Bengal Presidency Army

The 14th (Ferozepore) Sikh Infantry: The chronology of the regiment was:
- 1846: Raised as the Regiment of Ferozepore
- 1861:14th Bengal Native Infantry
- 1864:14th (The Ferozepore) Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry
- 1885:14th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry (Ferozepore Sikhs)
- 1901:14th (Ferozepore) Sikh Infantry
- 1903:14th Ferozepore Sikhs
- 1906: 14th Prince of Wales's Own Ferozepore Sikhs
- 1910: 14th King George V's Own Ferozepore Sikhs
- 1922: 1st Battalion (King George's Own( (Ferozepore Sikhs) 11th Sikh Regiment
- 1945: 1st Battalion Sikh Regiment

The 14th Sikhs was part of the International Force that assembled in China in 1900, to suppress the Boxer Rebellion, and the regiment left China 2 x years later

The descendent unit was restyled in 1981 when it became 4th Battalion Mechanised Infantry Regiment (1 Sikh), and continues to thrive in the Indian Army of 2025
