During his service with 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders on the North West Frontier of British India, Henry would most likely have been present, in the 'Storming of the Dargai Heights' on, 20 October 1897, whereat, Piper George Findlater and Private Edward Lawson of the battalion each won the Victoria Cross for their conspicuous gallantry during the battle. What is more certain is that he was definitely present at the Battle of Elandslaagte, just over 2 x years later, where this time the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders were once more to the fore, and where the Drummers (Buglers) & Pipers - including Drummer Hallett - per the example of Drum-Major Lawrence of the Gordons, rallied the British force to Colonel Ian Hamilton's command of 'Fix Bayonets! Charge", and where 2 x Victoria Crosses were awarded to the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders
