The insignia of superb quality, and fitted with the 'French' colonial issue silk medal riband

Originally created by Emperor Dong Kanh Khanh of Annam (now Vietnam) on 4 March 1886. By decrees of 1896, the order became a French 'Colonial' order administered by the Chancellery of the Legion of Honour, and could be awarded to French recipients through to circa 1950's

Basic award criteria before being eligible for nomination to the order was that French recipients should have served at least 10 years continuous or aggregated service in the French colonies & territories in Indochina (Annam, Tonkin, Laos & Cambodia)
