Awarded to Algerian nationals who were wounded in action, or seriously injured and invalided due to service during the War of National Liberation against the former French colonial regime between 1954-1962
It has been estimated that between 140000-150000 Algerians died fighting for their independence during the long running War of Liberation
The medal (Medaille de Grand Blesse, Mutile de Guerre) was instituted in 1984, and awarded retrospectively
